October 4, 2014 - How to Change

Change is in the air everywhere now.  The trees are changing.  The weather is changing.  The sun is changing.  Have you thought about changing yourself?  There’s no better time than the present.  I mean that literally.  Fall is the season of serious change, and I’ve always felt that when we follow Nature and mimic her, we have greater success in our own lives because we are going with the flow of energy and not against it.

If your life is exactly where you want it to be, then you don’t need much change, maybe a little tweaking here and there.  If your life is not remotely where you want it to be and you are unhappy, then you’ll need a lot of change.  But how do you do this?  Do you buy new clothes?  Join a new club?  Go back to school?  Change your hairstyle?

Time to change.

No, none of that.  All of that is part of the manmade world, and if you want real change--change in your heart, change in your mind, and change in your soul--then you need to look to the natural world.  Look around you.  The first big recent change you’ll see is the trees.  What are they doing?  They’re letting go of their leaves.  So that’s how you begin:  you let go.  Let go of your leaves, the things that no longer serve you, the attitudes that are old, the behavior that is worn out.  Let it all go.  These things may have served a purpose at one point, but now they are like old leaves.  Let them go.

What else is changing around us in the natural world right now?  The weather is changing.  It’s getting colder.  It’s not as sunny anymore, and when it is, it’s not as hot.  So that’s the next step:  let go of the heat.  If you have any fires that have smoldered way beyond what they should have in your heart and mind and soul, then put them out.  Extinguish them now.  You don’t need them anymore.  You don’t need to continue to fan old flames.  Welcome in the cold air, then wrap your arms around yourself--I mean it!--and hug yourself like a nice warm coat.  The cold is not here to hurt you.  It’s here to help, and if you know how to use it to your benefit, you will reap its hidden treasures.

What else is changing around us in the natural world right now?  The sun itself is changing, or at least it appears that way to us on Earth.  It’s at a different angle in the sky.  It casts different shadows now.  The days are growing shorter.  So that’s the next step:  shine your light differently.  Stop beating the same old dead horse and start shining your light on other things.  Look into the old shadows of your heart and soul.  Shine the light on them at a different angle and toss them out.  Acknowledge the hidden things, the things you are afraid of or ashamed of, and they will just disappear like a wisp of smoke.

And really that’s all there is to it.  Continue to watch the world around you, and when Nature makes a change, go ahead and make the same change in yourself.  When Nature adds something or grows something new, go ahead and add something or grow something new within yourself.  It’s so much easier to follow the natural energies than to fight against them.  There is strength in numbers.
